Hiring a Copywriter: The Top 5 Questions Every Copywriter You Hire Must Be Able To Answer

1) Do you have someone better than you to critique your copy?
Every serious copywriter works with a mentor or colleague who can critique and/or edit his work. Unless your copywriter is an A-list internet marketer, not having someone to oversee his work is surefire sign that copywriting isn't his full-time business, or that copywriting is simply a way to make money while attempting to make it as a fiction writer.
When your copy must generate leads or sales, you can't afford to gamble with someone who isn't whole-heatedly invested in the art and science of copywriting.
2) Do you have a plan to continually improve your copywriting skills?
Good copywriters continuously improve their craft. Here are some of the signs you should look for: reads books and completes courses on a regular basis, participates in marketing hotseats and mastermind groups, and invests in personal coaching. This is an easy way to separate the fly-by-night writer from the experienced copywriter.
3) Do you have a checklist to avoid careless mistakes in the copy?
Mistakes are easy to make, and potentially devastating to a business. Imagine spending $10,000 on an ad with a phone number misprinted in the call to action. Everyone makes mistakes, yet these are the kind of mistakes no one can afford to make. Be sure your copywriter has a checklist to prevent careless mistakes.
4) Do you have a system in place to capture all the information you need quickly?
The last thing you need is for your copywriter to keep coming back for more information because he didn't capture everything he needed the first time. Besides the annoyance of having to hold his hand, the person who doesn't know what he's looking for the first time is likely experimenting as he goes.
If your copywriter asks for interviews with the product creator, or with sales/customer service reps who deal with the product being sold, this is a very good sign. Allow him as much access as you can, as it will help him write at his best.
5) Do you practice the principals of Direct Response Copywriting?
This is the most critical question, which your copywriter must be able to respond to enthusiastically: "Yes!" Only Direct Response Copywriting techniques will give you the highest possible return on investment for your marketing spend. Writers who aren't familiar with Direct Response should not be trusted to sell or market any of your products or services - it's that simple.
